Professional Supervision

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE

Do you have a background in Christian Ministry? Have you worked as a pastoral carer in the health or education industry, or within some ancillary sectors? If you want to upskill and become a professional supervisor of pastoral carers, then study our Graduate Certificate in Professional Supervision (Pastoral).


This course is suitable for coaches, mentors and supervisors of the clergy, senior chaplains, team-leaders and anyone else with ministry experience wishing to enter private practice in pastoral supervision. With this graduate certificate, current supervisors can upgrade their skills and knowledge and qualify for the theoretical component of membership with professional supervision associations like the Australasian Association of Supervision (AAOS).


Once complete, this course will allow you to qualify for an associate membership with the AAOS, depending on your progress in training. After graduation, you’ll be eligible for full membership, pending submission of a log of practice.

What is Professional Supervision?

Admission Criteria
  • Successful completion of an undergraduate degree in either Theology, Social Work, Psychology, Education, Management or equivalent;

OR

  • have at least five years professional experience within a helping profession and a recommendation from their employer, professional association, or ordaining body.
Course Structure & Enrolment Pattern

PART-TIME

Year 1 - Session 1

  • MIN503 – Professional Supervision 1 (8 cp)
  • MIN400 – Reflective Practice in Contemporary Ministry (8 cp)

Year 1 - Session 2

  • MIN525 – Professional Supervision 2 (8 cp)
  • MIN406 – Group and Peer Supervision (8 cp)

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

  1. Be able to demonstrate specialized knowledge regarding current best practice in the fields of professional and pastoral supervision, including on issues of Australian law and practice, professional ethics, and around mandatory reporting requirements and critically reflect upon ethical decision making in the field
  2. Be able to critically examine and evaluate contemporary theories and methods in professional and pastoral supervision and critically reflect upon personal practice in diverse inter-cultural and social contexts, including with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  3. Be able to apply and communicate an advanced knowledge of the dynamics of the supervisory relationship within a variety of ecclesial and professional contexts, and be able to demonstrate advanced skills in constructive, ethically informed, and culturally competent engagement with supervisees
  4. Be able to understand the need for, and have begun the development of, networks of trust and cooperation among ministry professionals
  5. Be able to demonstrate a higher order of skills in critical analysis, theological reflection, scholarly debate, and sound and informed investigation of the professional practice of ministry
