During the forthcoming summer session beginning on 17 November, two key subjects are being offered at St Mark’s in intensive mode, 12–14 January 2026. The two subjects are Introduction to Christian Theology and the Diaconate.
In Introduction to Christian Theology, students will be led into a deeper understanding of the major topics of Christian theology: revelation and its relation to faith and understanding, the identity and significance of Jesus Christ, the identity and agency of the Holy Spirit, creation and the problems of sin and evil, the church and its mission, and last things (or the things that last).
This subject will be team-taught by three gifted and passionate theological teachers: Dr Jacqueline Service (Director of St Mark’s), Dr Amy Erickson, and Aden Cotterill.
If you want to gain a better understanding of the importance and relevance of Christian theology for daily life, work, and service, this will be a wonderful way to become acquainted with the riches of the Christian tradition.
In the subject on the Diaconate, students will be taught by a master teacher, Rev’d Professor Brian Douglas, on the biblical bases, historical development, and contemporary relevance of the order of ministry known as the diaconate (or ministry of deacons).
The subject provides an opportunity to reflect upon and to discuss the re-emergence of the diaconate in recent decades, examining its expression in a variety of Christian traditions and considering diaconal mission, practice, and spirituality. In essence, the Diaconate is concerned with ministry as service – to God, to the church, and to the world.
