  • Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in theology, psychology or Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) equivalent. Applicants with degrees in any other disciplines are encouraged to apply.

  • Applicants without an undergraduate degree may be considered, with evidence that they are able to undertake tertiary studies in this area (such as a letter of motivation and two professional or academic references).

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

  1. Be able to establish a therapeutic pastoral counselling relationship and environment
  2. Be able to apply advanced communication and counselling skills within pastoral counselling situations
  3. Be able to address critically professional, ethical and theological issues relevant to pastoral counselling
  4. Be able to demonstrate self-reflective practice
  5. Be able to respond appropriately to grief and loss issues in specific pastoral counselling situations
  6. Be able to apply appropriate pastoral counselling responses to crisis situations
  7. Be able to identify and evaluate critically complex problems in the pastoral counselling context
  8. Be able to demonstrate the advanced skills required for working with couples and families in the pastoral counselling setting
  9. Be able to demonstrate an integration of psychological, sociological, anthropological and educational theory with the theology relevant to their pastoral practice
  10. Be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of spiritual perspectives of pastoral counselling
  11. Be able to evaluate critically the need and timing for referral to other relevant professionals
  12. Be able to demonstrate responsibility and accountability for personal professional practice
