Taught from a faith-oriented perspective, the Bachelor of Theology from Charles Sturt University will equip you for Christian ministry or leadership – and broaden your horizons. The course is theologically and biblically rich, vocationally oriented, and is integrated with practical experience.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have ONE of the following for admission to the Charles Sturt Bachelor of Theology:
  • Minimum ATAR of 60 required; or
  • successful study at university level (minimum two subjects); or
  • TAFE Cert III or higher VET qualification or equivalent industry qualifications; or
  • successful completion of TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) or a bridging program; or
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) with an equivalent ranking to the currently listed ATAR; or
  • relevant industry experience of at least two years - this may include, but is not limited to, Church or NGO-type ministry, nursing or related healthcare professions ("the caring professions"), and school teaching at any level; or
  • partial completion of TAFE Diploma level study (minimum 50 per cent).

CREDIT ARRANGEMENT

  • Students who complete Clinical and Pastoral Education from an accredited institution will receive 16 points of credit as THL221 Clinical and Pastoral Education in the sub-discipline of Practical Theology.

Course Structure

The course consist of 9 core subjects, one subject in Indigenous / Culture Studies, one subject in Biblical Language and a set of restricted electives.

  • A minimum of 20 Theological subjects
  • A minimum of four 200 level subjects: at least two 200 level in Biblical Studies and two 200 level in Systematic Theology
  • A minimum of six 300 level subjects:  at least two 300 level in Biblical Studies and two 300 level in Systematic Theology
  • A maximum of twelve 100 level subjects (including core)
  • A maximum of four subjects (32 points) may be selected from a discipline other than theology
  • A maximum of two 400 level 8 point subjects (16)

Enrolment Pattern
  • There is a degree of flexibility in the course structure. Students are encouraged to first complete the eight 100 Level subjects that serve as a foundation to the four sub-disciplines.
  • Students will structure their progress through the degree according to the requirements in the degree and to availability of subjects in a given session.
  • Students must ensure that they meet the appropriate Exit Point course structure in order to graduate with their chosen qualification.
  • BTh has a 200 Level subject that address religious and cultural questions in relation to relevant social and historical context: THL225 Aboriginal Cultures and Spirituality

EARLY EXIT AWARDS

There are 2 exit awards:

  • 1260TH01 - Associate Degree in Theology [Exit point only]
  • 1113TH01 - Diploma of Theology [Exit point only]

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

  • demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of the Christian faith through detailed study and principled interpretation of its scriptures and traditions;
  • analyse and critically evaluate theological methods and issues in the light of their contemporary and historical contexts;
  • critically review and analyse the contribution of theology to a wide range of contexts, including social, cultural and ecological issues
  • apply skills of theological research, critical thinking and communication to a variety of ministerial and practical contexts;
  • articulate the relevance and implications of Christian belief and practice in contemporary societies and contexts, particularly Australia, Asia and the South Pacific
