Theology 

HONOURS DEGREE

Taught from a faith-oriented perspective, Charles Sturt University’s Bachelor of Theology offers a thorough grounding in the four foundational areas of theology: Biblical Studies, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology and Church History.
 
The course has a strong basis in Biblical Studies and Systematic Theology, but students have opportunities to pursue a significant number of subjects in any of the four main areas. Although undertaken with the rigour of university studies, there is a strong commitment to a balance of theory and practice. St Mark’s and Charles Sturt University also offer a robust Honours program for students who have achieved at a high level through the BTh coursework.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Applicants to the Bachelor of Theology (Honours) will:

  • hold a Bachelor of Theology, or equivalent

OR

  • be eligible to graduate with the Bachelor of Theology, or equivalent

AND

  • have attained a credit average or better in Level 2 and Level 3 subjects

  • THL544 – Theology and Spirituality in Contemporary Engagement (16cp)
  • THL545 – Classic Texts in Christian Theology (16cp)

OR

Biblical Studies (32cp)

Two subjects from the following:

  • THL511 – Contemporary Approaches to Biblical Studies (16cp)
  • THL514 – Theological Hermeneutics (16cp)
  • THL517 – Advanced Biblical Exegesis (16cp)
  • THL535 – Seminar in Biblical and Theological Interpretation (16cp)

OR

Practical Theology (32 Credit Points)

Two subjects from the following:

  • THL514 – Theological Hermeneutics (16cp)
  • THL518 – Studies in Liturgy and Worship (16cp)
  • THL519 – Contemporary Issues in Practical Theology (16cp)

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

  1. be able to demonstrate the ability to review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge critically to address both traditional and newly formed research problems with intellectual independence in the field of theology

  2. be able to demonstrate advanced critical understanding in a specialised theological field

  3. be able to demonstrate critical thinking and interpretive judgement in developing new understanding in the field of theology

  4. be able to plan and execute a substantial scholarly research project with clarity and independence

  5. be able to demonstrate communication skills to present a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge and ideas in the field of theology to a variety of audiences
