What am I eligible for?
Charles Sturt offer a wide range of scholarships and grants to support students at every stage of their academic journey. Whether you’re beginning undergraduate study, pursuing postgraduate coursework, or undertaking a higher degree by research (HDR), these financial opportunities are designed to help reduce the cost of study and remove barriers to participation.
Coursework student scholarships
While there are no theology-specific awards, the School of Theology students (both undergrad and postgraduate) are eligible for several general, equity, and placement-focused scholarships:
1. University-wide Scholarships & Grants
Who it is for:
Charles Sturt scholarships and grants are there to help students across all disciplines (including theology) with costs such as tuition, textbooks, accommodation and living expenses. Awards span academic merit, equity (e.g. First Nations, carers, regional), community service, sporting and course-specific grants. These awards are funded by both Charles Sturt and external partners (alumni, government, not-for-profits, local organisations). You can apply for any of the awards offered, for which you meet the criteria. There is no limit on the number of applications you submit.

2. Charles Sturt Kickstart Scholarship
Who it is for:
3. Equity & Inclusion Grant
Purpose:
Assist Commonwealth-supported students experiencing disadvantage (e.g., carers, students with disability, mental health conditions, or from rural/remote areas)
Who it is for:
4. Charles Sturt Student Success Scholarship:
Purpose:
Supports general study expenses early in the session
Who it is for:
Commencing and continuing students (including School of Theology).
5. Professional Placement Equity Grant:
Who it is for:
Domestic students in compulsory placements, with financial need (ideal for field education or supervised ministry practicum).
6. Intensive School Equity Grant:
Who it is for:
Students attending compulsory residential intensives or retreats.
How to apply for a scholarship:
Postgraduate Research (HDR) School of Theology Students
Charles Sturt University offers a range of competitive scholarships for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students to support living costs, tuition fees, and research-related expenses.
1. Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) Scholarships
Who it is for:
Higher degrees by research (HDR) candidates (PhD, MPhil, Professional Doctorate) in any discipline, including theology
Types & Deadlines
Value:
Covers tuition fees plus a tax-free living stipend (currently ~$30–35K pa)
2. Research Fee Offset Scholarship
Who it is for:
Domestic HDR candidates (PhD or MPhil) in Arts & Education (i.e. School of Theology research degrees)
Value:
100% tuition fee waiver for the duration of the research degree
3. The Toni Downes New Horizons Travel Prize
Purpose:
Support students to undertake short-term travel (e.g. conferences, intensive schools, study tours) that enhances their learning or research—open to all Charles Sturt students, including those in the School of Theology.
How to apply:
Submit a letter of application (addressing how the travel meets the prize aims) via email to the Charles Sturt University Foundation Trust scholarship office
