How to apply

Applying for an HDR

Below is a brief overview on how to apply for a research degree through the School of Theology at Charles Sturt University:

Step 1: Explore theology research programs

The School of Theology offers:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • Master of Philosophy

These programs allow deep engagement with areas such as biblical studies, theology, church history, ministry practice, ethics, and public theology.

Step 2: Identify a suitable research topic & supervisor

  • Review the School of Theology staff profiles to find a supervisor whose expertise aligns with your interests.
  • Contact the prospective supervisor to discuss your proposed research and confirm their availability and interest.
  • You may also contact the Sub-Dean (Graduate Studies) for advice on supervision and proposal development.

Step 3: Draft your research proposal

  • Prepare a 1,000–2,000 word proposal outlining your research question, methodology, and relevance to your field.
  • Your supervisor can help you refine this before submission

Step 4: Prepare supporting documents

Your application must include:

  • Finalised research proposal
  • Academic transcripts
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Two academic referee reports
  • Evidence of English proficiency (if applicable)

Step 5: Submit your application

  • Apply through Charles Sturt Graduate Research Application Portal.
  • You can apply at any time during the year.

Step 6: Apply for scholarships (optional)
