What does it really mean to be the church today — and how did we get here? Being the Church is an upcoming intensive at St Mark's that takes that question seriously.
Rooted in Scripture and theology, it explores the identity and mission of the church from the New Testament right through to the present day — including the church's sacramental life, its calling to mission, and its relationship to Israel and the story of Jesus.
But this isn't just a historical survey. The intensive also grapples honestly with the hard questions facing the church in the twenty-first century: the legacy of colonialism, the abuse of power, the unravelling of Christendom, and what faithful witness looks like in a post-Christian culture. The twentieth century ecumenical movement gets attention too, alongside the ongoing challenge of being the church across different cultural and national contexts.
If you're in ministry, studying theology, or simply wrestling with what it means to belong to — and believe in — the church, this intensive will give you fresh resources for thinking it through.
