Congratulations to Dr Michael Gladwin, whose article Brothers in Alms: Australian Anglican Army Chaplains and the Impact of the First World War, 1919–1939 has been published in the Journal of Anglican Studies (Cambridge University Press).
The article examines the lasting impact of the First World War on the lives and ministries of Australian Anglican chaplains – the ‘padres’ – in the two decades that followed. Michael argues that returned chaplains shaped Anzac commemoration more profoundly than any other tradition, creating rituals and liturgy that gave form to an emerging Australian civil religion. Many also returned with a renewed concern for social justice, founding religious brotherhoods and ministries among working men, including Gerard Tucker’s Brotherhood of St Laurence, which continues its work today.
The research will be of particular interest to those in chaplaincy, and to anyone interested in how the Anglican Church has shaped the Australian story. The article is Open Access, so it can be read in full online by anyone, free of charge.
