Description

EDITED BY Graeme Garrett

The Habit of Freedom explores the intriguing story of engagement between Christian faith and Australian culture across half a century, 1955 - 2004. St Mark's Review, the journal of St Mark's National Theological Centre in Canberra, has published a wide range of articles and reviews, and hosted debates on matters of theology, ethics, science, politics and aesthetics since its founding by Bishop Ernest Burgmann.

This book is a selection of the best of that broad and often controversial conversation. History nearly always takes us by surprise, says Joseph Brodsky (Nobel Laureate for Literature, 1987). These pages confirm that judgment. Faith in search of understanding and dialogue in the Australian context is nothing if not surprising in breadth, wisdom and imagination.
Canon Graeme Garrett is Senior Research Fellow at St Mark's National Theological Centre and Professorial Fellow in the School of Theology at Charles Sturt University. He taught theology at St Mark's for almost two decades prior to retirement in 2005 and was editor of St Mark's Review from 1992 - 1999.
