After nine years as Director of St Mark’s National Theological Centre, the Rev’d Assoc. Professor Andrew Cameron will finish in that role early in September.
Andrew began at St Mark’s in 2014 after moving to Canberra with his family. While overseeing the life of the Centre, he taught coursework and higher degree students in the School of Theology, specializing in theological ethics. He has also overseen programs of formation of applicants for ordination in the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, and headed St Mark’s VET-sector Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Andrew will remain in ministry within the Diocese, and in early 2024 will take up a role at St John’s Anglican Church in Reid, ACT, working alongside the Rev’d David McLennan as Senior Associate Priest. ‘I’m delighted to be able to be a minister again,’ says Andrew.
The President of St Mark’s Council, Bishop Mark Short, says ‘During his time as Director Andrew has renewed the theological focus of St Mark’s, strengthened its staff team and developed its connections with the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn. I am delighted that he will continue amongst us, and am confident his intellectual and pastoral gifts will make a major contribution to our life and mission.’
St Mark’s Senior Lecturer in Church History, Dr Michael Gladwin, will step into the role of Acting Director. The Rev’d Dr Jeanette Mathews will continue as Head of the CSU School of Theology, until the usual handover of that role to a colleague within the School.
‘It has been a huge privilege to be entrusted with St Mark’s,’ Andrew said. ‘This place takes all comers, wherever they are on the map of faith, and helps people to take their next step into the knowledge and love of God, in Jesus Christ. I’ve been delighted by the slow but sure work of God in the lives of the people I’ve met here. I’ll miss our faculty, but between them and our Council, St Mark’s is in good hands.’ Andrew will continue to supervise higher degree students, and may have an ongoing role within the CSU School of Theology.
St Mark’s Council has begun the process of drawing up a position description and selection criteria for Andrew’s successor. In the meantime all enquiries about the role of Director will be forwarded to the St Mark’s Council’s selection panel.
